A brief overview of Zombie Dice
Zombie Dice is a dice game all about pushing your luck. The goal is to become a connoisseur of the big brain by eating more brains than your opponents. But be careful, some of those annoying people have guns and if they blow you up three times, it’s over.
The game is decided by rolling the dice . You want to get brain symbols and avoid those with a rifle. It’s not about real skills, just coincidence, a lot of tension and, hopefully, a brain.
Zombie Dice works nicely as a simple game for the whole family or simply as a quick way to fill time without having to think too much.
Variations and extensions
Zombie Dice has several extensions that add new elements to the game. These include:
Zombie Cube 2: Dual function
This package includes two extensions pleasantly themed around classic horror movies. The first, Big Summer Action Movie , introduces two new characters to the game: Hunk and Hottie. They both work just like the people in the game, but if you choose these dice, the stakes are suddenly much higher.
The other is Santa Claus meets zombies . In this one, a festive red and white dice with a lot of brains on offer is thrown into the cup, along with some other goodies.
I especially enjoyed the Continuation Direct Video plugin that combines all three!
- Zombie Dice adds some new twists without slowing it down!
- Want a double brain icon? Are you willing to risk double ...
- Santa can bring you presents! An energy drink makes you ...
Zombie Dice 3: School bus
In this extension, your zombie will find himself with a penchant for hunting the delicious brains of school children. It comes with a 12-sided matrix that brings a bunch of new possible outcomes into the game. Now, in addition to looking after children who have a rifle, you should also avoid the school bus.
- For 2 or more players
- 10 minutes of play
- For fans of dice games: Cthulhu Dice, Giant Cthulhu Dice and ...
Zombie Dice Horde Edition
Zombie Dice Horde Edition combines all extensions and the original game into one box. You also get an extra bag of fabric and a record that was not included in the original.
- This includes classic zombie cubes and zombie extensions ...
- 2 or more players
- 10-20 minutes
Unpacking Zombie Dice
Zombie Dice can be unpacked very little. For starters, it doesn’t even come in a box! Here you will find:
- 13 dice: 3 red, 4 yellow, 6 green
- Rules
- Cup
The aforementioned 'cup' is more like a cardboard tube with a plastic lid. Here you will save the dice and also use them to shake during the game.
The cubes are black with symbols on them in different colors. They are well made and easy to understand.
It’s nice that the ‘policy’ is just a one-sided sheet of A5 paper, as that’s all that needs to be explained in this game.
As for the artwork, he has a feel for “Plants Against Zombies”. They used a cartoonish approach instead of focusing on being close to something scary. Given the simplistic nature of the game, this is the right choice, as with so few components, you can’t rely too much on the theme.
How to play Zombie Dice
Zombie Dice is a game for two players or more, where the goal is of course to eat as many brains as possible.
According to the instructions, the player who goes first is the one who can say "Braaaaains!" with the most feeling. For extra taste, I can recommend rolling your eyes in the back of your head. (If you’ve already played the game, whoever won last gets the first turn).
You start by shaking all the cubes in the cup. Each cube represents a delicious, tasty man. Randomly pick three out of the cup (without looking) and roll them up.
The cubes are available in three different colors - green, yellow and red - in this order the problems increase. Hopefully you will want to avoid these red dice. There are three symbols you can move:
- Brain - well done. That means you’ve successfully eaten your brain! (Yum) That counts as a point. Take the matrix and place it on the left.
- Shotgun - damn it, the damn man decided to fight and shoot at you. Put that matrix on your right.
- Imprints - the victim escaped. These cubes should be in the middle.
At this stage, you have the option to stop or continue. If you decide to stop, then you reach one point for each brain. Write down the result, place all the dice back in the cup and pass them to the next player.
If you decide to continue, take as many dice out of the jar to get a total of up to three games (the dice that are already in play are the ones you placed with the Footprints symbol). Rotate again and do the same as above.
If you reach a total of three rifles at any given time, then, I’m sorry, you’re out - people got you better. Your move ends and you will not be able to keep any of your brain (IE. You have no points).
Otherwise, you can keep driving as many times as you want, try your luck and strive to score those points.
If you ever run out of people in a cup - if you reach them, you’ll simply take all the brains you’ve put aside (note how many you had), put them in a cup, and move on. Be sure to drop the dice of the rifle!
End of the game
The game ends when someone reaches 13 brains. At this point, continue the round until everyone reaches the same number of turns. Then add up your brain and the one with the most points wins!
Your first game of zombie dice
With this game, there’s not much you need to know to run on the floor. The instructions are written on one side of a small piece of paper and the first game should be easy to continue.
Note, however, that you will need to provide your own way to record the score, as no scoring plate is included (unless you have the Horde Edition Extension Pack). You can easily do this on your phone. Save the planet and all that!
It’s very easy to play, so there are few areas you could go wrong. All I would point out is that you have an advantage if you go the last lap, because then you will know what result you have to beat to win. This can prevent you from overdoing yourself unnecessarily and risk getting three rifle symbols.
So it's a little weird that the person who has the most compelling zombie impression goes first.
Of course, this was included as a bit of fun, so as a rule, I don’t read holes. I think it's great. But why not consider giving the person with the most convincing “BRAAAAAINS” a choice of who goes first, instead of forcing them to turn first? You never know, this extra boost can really show Brain Cox (intentional typo) in your group.
Advantages disadvantages
Advantages:
- Extremely versatile
- Simple and easy
- Brain: You don’t need them
Weaknesses:
- Nothing new
- He can start to feel overwhelmed easily
Being such a short and fast affair (they feel more like agile, evil zombies 28 days later than the slow, rather casual Dawn of the Dead (1978) creatures) Zombie Dice is a useful game in the house.
If you play fast, it can only take five minutes, which helps you fill the time in all sorts of scenarios. Whether you’re waiting for pizza to arrive, you need a quick fun game in which you know the attention span is likely to be short or there will be a lighter midnight evening dedicated to mentally challenging games, Zombie Dice will work.
The simplicity of the game also contributes to its versatility. With just one small page of rules, it can be played fast or slow; with children or adults ; as a drinking game ; and without the actual maximum number of participants.
Either way, any round can be extremely exciting. The very nature of “push your luck” games means you don’t know exactly what to expect. That is the happiness of the draw. If you’re incredibly lucky, you could go out in one roll. But you can continue to roll and enjoy thirteen brains in one turn! (Hopefully you will have a nice mix of victims of abstract, creative and logical thinking, otherwise the courses could become a bit the same).
Zombie Dice, on the other hand, has its limitations and probably won’t provide hours of fun at once. Don’t get me wrong, I like the brain like the next zombie. However, if you play it too often - which is easy when you make and ask every game in ten minutes - it will quickly start to feel old. As such, my advice is to keep it. With thirteen dice, only that much can happen.
TL; DR
Zombie Dice is a dice game all about pushing your luck. Your goal is to eat more brains than your opponents. But be careful, some of those annoying people have guns and if they blow you up three times, it’s over.
While it won’t receive any awards for innovation, Zombie Dice is extremely fun and has a useful purpose as an easy option for multiple pick-ups and departures.
Conclusion: a verdict?
I’m a big fan of Zombie Dice. It will not receive any award for innovation, but it is a useful purpose as an easy option for multiple takeovers and departures.
Whether you’re with kids, a group of non-players, or professionals, you’re sure to provide a few rounds of fun as you fight for the Gray Cell dinner.
I especially enjoyed this game of rude reliance on games of chance / gambling. Sometimes it can be refreshing to take a break from developing complex strategies and instead just see how far Lady Luck can take you.
This is not a competition for those with the most brains. But who can eat most of them. It’s time for those with a big appetite to get their desserts. Brain pie, who?
