Spiel des Jahres - Game of the Year Nominees (2019)
Spiel des Jahres - Game of the Year Nominees (2019)
Spiel des Jahres (German: Game of the Year) is an award for board games and card games, established in 1978 with the aim of rewarding excellence in game design and promoting top games in the German market.
The prizes are divided into 3 categories: Spiel des Jahres (Game of the Year), Kennerspiel des Jahres (Game of the Year connoisseur) and Kinderspiel des Jahres (Children's Game of the Year).
This year, the judges specifically chose easy, instructive and easy family-friendly games , most with a playing time of less than 20 minutes. The slightly heavier category of “enthusiasts”, the “Kennerspiel des Jahres”, received a more diverse group of entries.
Let’s take a look at what ranked in the top three in each category and which games took home the grand prize!
Nominated for Spiel des Jahres 2019
Only one - the winner!
author Ludovic Roudy and Bruno Sautter, Repos Production
Just One is a cooperative fun game where you play together to discover as many secret words as possible. Find the best tip to help a teammate. Be unique, as all the same hints will be canceled!
The whole game is played on 13 cards. The goal is to score as close as possible to 13. In case of a correct answer, the players score 1 point. In case of a wrong answer, they lose the current card and the top card. So lost 2 points. In case of lack of response, players lose only the current card and therefore only 1 point.
You have a choice - change the difference! "Publisher's description."
Small historical point: (from BGG )
Originally, Just One was called We Are The Word and was released by the Entertainment Consortium.
Repos Production bought the rights in early 2018 and adapted the game. The Belgians, dressed in Sombrero, decided to improve the quality of the components, add 50 new words and change the name of the game. After this new release, the game went from French to World.
- Cooperative fun game
- 550 words to guess and others to guess
- Quality erasable markers for perpetual writing tips
LAMA
author Reiner Knizia, AMIGO publishing house
In LAMA, you want to get your cards out of your hand as quickly as possible, but you may not be able to play what you want, so stop and freeze your hand or draw and hope to continue playing?
Each player starts the round with six cards in his hands; the deck consists of llama cards and cards numbered 1 to 6, with eight copies each. On the move, the active player can play a card, draw a card or quit. To play a card, you must play the same number as the top card of the discard pile or one number higher. If there are 6 discards on the pile, you can play 6 or a llama, if a llama is on top, you can play another llama or 1. If you stop, lay the remaining cards face down and do not continue the action in a circle.
The round ends when one player empties his hand or if all players stop. In both cases, players collect chips based on the cards in front of them, either in their hands or on the table. Each card with different numbers in the hand receives white chips (each worth 1 point) equal to the value of the card, and one or more lamas receive a black chip (worth 10 points). If you have played all your cards, you can return one token (white or black) that you collected earlier to stock. Then shuffle all the cards and start a new round.
The game ends a round that at least one player has a total of forty or more points. Whoever has the least points wins! "Publisher's description."

wonderful
author Marco Teubner, founded by Pegasus Spiele
The spell that went wrong scattered the inhabitants of Fabulantica throughout the country. Confused about what happened, residents hide in towers waiting for help, as no one knows where they stayed. This must be discovered by the players. There are 3 open mission cards waiting all the time, each of which requires players to find a specific resident and then find their friend. To this end, players play travel cards that match four types of routes, move across the board, or travel to the desired location using the Magic Carpet. The occupant in each tower is revealed by all the players when visiting their current location - but if that resident was part of the active players mission, the resident, including the tower, changes his position. The winner is the player who wisely plans the trips, remembers the locations of the residents and first completes three tasks.
With its accessible rules, Fabulantica challenges players from the age of 6 onwards to make the most of their hand cards, to be constantly on the lookout for any resident to “disappear” again, and to move effectively for success. "Publisher's description."
