A brief overview of Tiny Epic Quest

Tiny Epic Quest board game

Tiny Epic Quest is a small but voluminous racing game for two to four players (there is only one version included in the rules).

Your goal is to score more points than your opponents by exploring the map, completing quests, defeating dwarves, learning spells, and discovering legendary items.

In five rounds, first use a simple workers installation system to choose which adventures you want your heroes to take. Then, with the help of five dice , you must try to complete them heroically. But how far are you willing to push your happiness?

Variations and extensions

Tiny Epic board game versions

I’m a big fan of The Tiny Series of Epic Games . It is especially impressive how, despite the fact that they are all small and epic, each is in itself a completely unique and independent game. Others include:

Tiny epic galaxies

You guessed it. Pack your bag space and get ready for a small, epic cosmic adventure. This time, the players control the galactic empire and fight for victory points by colonizing the planets and meeting targets. Playing in Tiny Epic Galaxies is largely based on rolling combinations of dice to perform various actions.

Unpacking Tiny Epic Quest

Tiny Epic Quest board game

Tiny Epic Quest may be small, but it contains a lot. The components you get are:

  • 12 heroic heroes
  • 12 Legendary items
  • 12 Treasure items
  • Stand for 1 piece
  • 4 playing cards
  • 17 Map maps
  • 35 Other cards
  • 33 tokens
  • 8 markers
  • 5 adventure cubes

Tiny Epic Quest contains some great components that don’t need to be stored in a small box.

My favorite part are by far the mipes. They are solid guys and can actually hold small plastic objects that you take during the game! Now I may not be the most sentimental among people, but I have to admit that a meeple with a mini sword and shield is damn cute.

Otherwise, the map / game area is made with maps. This has its advantages as it allows you to have a different map and pack nicely every time you play (to some extent). Although it can be a bit frustrating to have to be redirected every time someone makes a horse too impressed to impress when moving their man.

Otherwise, the artwork fits nicely into the fantasy genre search. You don’t have to try something new, but you conjure up a comforting, Zelda — one feeling I had to appreciate.

How to play Tiny Epic Quest

Tiny Epic Quest board game

The goal of the game

Your goal is to earn as many victory points in five rounds. You can do this in a number of different ways, from fighting goblins to completing quests, enchanting, or searching for legendary items.

Each round is divided into a Day and Night phase. During the day, you will move, take action and put your heroes in the adventures you want to go to at night. At night, the dice come out and you need to solve your plans by using a mechanism to push happiness without running out of health.

Setup

All players receive a gaming card that tracks their health, strength and inventory, as well as a set of legendary items.

Then set the map using the full random procedure described in the instructions and place the three heroes of each player on their cards on the castle map. You will see that some maps also have goblin portals on the map. Place passive goblin tokens on them.

Finally, place five moving cards and three search cards face up in the middle and show 12 treasure items on the stand.

Daily phase - relocation and tasks

There are four turns in the Dan phase. If you want to turn, the first player chooses one of the movement cards, and then he can decide whether to perform the movement with one of his heroes or not to do anything.

Once this player has selected and moved, the next players may decide to use the same type of move.

Movement maps include travel by horse, raft, griffin, ship and foot, each representing a different type of movement (horse maps, for example, allow horizontal movement with any number of maps; foot maps allow movement in any direction but only on an adjacent card etc.).

Maps with maps are divided into two regions, which may contain spelling obelisks, temples, mushroom cliffs, castles or goblin portals. If the card contains an aggressive goblin portal, you have to pay for a power supply to navigate it.

Once you have completed the move, you need to choose which area of the card you want to land. Some will allow you to complete an action there, such as a mushroom, or the castle will let your hero heal. Temples, goblin portals and obelisk spells will be saved in the night phase.

When all the players have the opportunity to use this moving card, the next player chooses one and the same process happens. This happens a total of four turns, no matter how many players there are.

Night phase - adventure and resolution

Now your heroes have to solve their actions with five action cubes. Heroes in the temple can look for items that can bring valuable benefits; those on the portals can attack the goblins; while spell obelisks allow you to learn a new spell. We call this adventure.

At this stage, you will move the health and strength labels to reflect your condition. If you reach zero, all your heroes return to the castle and lose all progress.

There are six possible symbols that you can move, resolved in this order:

  • Inflicts damage - for each rolled damage, the consecutive player takes the damage. For example, three damage symbols will hurt you and the next two players.
  • Gain strength - same as above, but add strength.
  • Conjure up magic - the advancement of a magic token.
  • Torch - continue along the temple.
  • Scroll - forward through the temple.
  • Goblin Attacks - Inflict damage on a goblin.

Note that the last three symbols can be used by all players when rolling, regardless of who rolled them.

Rolls spin in a group. At some point, you’ll decide to rest, lock in your progress, and mean you can’t do any more harm. However, you also can’t progress to the next phase of the night. The key here is to make the right decision about how far you can push your happiness.

Quests

You can earn extra points by completing tasks. Some, known as search missions, will simply require your heroes to move in a certain way during the day to meet the conditions. Let’s say they have everything on a certain type of card.

Others, called Treasuries, start at the temples and place their hero on the temple. You have to be the first player to come to the end and win it.

End of the game

The game continues for five rounds as you complete your adventures and score points. When you reach the end of the fifth turn, you add up all the points. Whoever has the most wins!

Your first game Tiny Epic Quest

Tiny Epic Quest board game

When playing Tiny Epic Quest, keep in mind that the number of players greatly affects how you approach the Night stage. With just two players , your health will decline significantly faster than in a four-player game. This is because every time someone inflicts more than one damage, you will be hit. If you reject three injuries, you take two!

That brings me to the second point. Remember that even if this is not your game, you are still very involved. Once you decide whether to rest or not, remember that you have to go through a whole cycle of everyone else’s turns. Not just your own. And even if you drive to the end of the temple, you have to rest then to be able to take the prize.

So, think ahead.

Advantages disadvantages

Advantages:

  • Simple worker accommodation system
  • An exciting element of gambling
  • Great game packed in a small box
  • Meeples can hold things back!

Weaknesses:

  • Luckily, some players may not like to rely on it

Tiny Epic Quest is a two-half game that helps keep interesting things to a minimum.

The Dan phase is a strategic system for deploying workers. Careful card selection and movement will be crucial to landing your people in places where they will be able to score the most points during the night phase. Some routes have higher potential payouts, but will your opponents be the first? Is there perhaps a less obvious combination that could pay off some big points?

On the other hand, the night phase is a complete bonanza that moves with the dice. Although the strategic decisions you make in the Dan phase can drastically affect your potential points, you can actually do very little in both phases to change the likelihood of success in your favor.

The result is that Tiny Epic Quest eventually leads to happiness. Make as many killer moves as you want. It won’t matter if you and the players run a bunch of damage symbols.

This could turn off some players. But for me, this was absolutely not a problem. Sure, the opportunity for strategy is rich in the day phase, but the tense excitement of the night phase was too much fun to want to change. The interaction of the players causing each other damage and racing to the end of the track is incredibly exciting and personal.

I also especially liked that you can use the dice rolled by your competitors. This way, everyone is deeply involved throughout, with little opportunity to divert attention from what’s going on at the table.

My enjoyment of Tiny Epic Quest is all the more impressive just because of how small the box is cramped. Although it is the perfect size for travel , it doesn’t look like a travel game. All the pieces are a good size and the amount of content he manages to jam is insane. And let’s face it, little swordsmen who have huge swords are wonderful.

TL; DR

The Tiny Epic game deserves a small, epic review. So here it goes:

Tiny Epic Quest is half the workers ’accommodation and half the“ imitate luck ”. It is strategic, exciting and deceptively in-depth. Oh, and people can keep things. What don't you like?

Conclusion: a verdict?

So I had fun playing Tiny Epic Quest. It may be small, but there is a lot of meat on these bones. Not just in terms of components - though it still amazes me how well they fit - but also the actual weight of the gameplay.

The contrast of the strategic decisions you have to make during the day phase and the night phase that bites your nails means that he really has something for everyone. What’s more, it’s incredibly easy to learn. Because of this, there are likely to be future gaming sessions with players with different experiences.

The Tiny Epic series continues to excite me. And this time I ended up feeling like Zelda, so maybe it’s still my favorite.
