10 best board games of 2021
2021 has come and gone. It has had some ups and downs, as is usually the case all these years. It’s always fun to look back and see some of the highlights of yesterday. Today we take a look at some of the best board games to be released in 2021. We took a look at the extensions, new IPs and everything in between to see what we were interested in in 2021.
So get ready and dive.
1. Crew: Deep Sea Mission
Mission Deep Sea is the spiritual successor to the original Crew team. Crew mechanics have improved their game with Mission Deep Sea. If you’re a fan of the original, you’ll probably like the sequel.
- Cooperative strategy game - win or lose together!
- A new twist in classic card games that require tricks
- The problems increase as the game progresses, so it's a good ...
The Crew is one of the few trick games that is actually co-op , making it quite unique. The game is almost identical to the original, but the upgraded mission maps and rules have simplified and perfected the entire series. It’s definitely worth checking out and has an insane amount of repeatability for such a simple yet wonderful game.
- Continuation of the winner of the Kennerspiel des Jahres, The Crew, with ...
- The Crew: Mission Deep Sea has the same innovative cooperative ...
- Work together to win the right tricks at the right time.
2. Cascadia
In the wake of the trekking board game, Cascadia looks to nature for its theme. Cascadia puts players in charge of their own wildlife preserve. How you place your tiles and how you fill them with wildlife is the meat of the game.
each animal scores differently and can only be placed on certain types of tiles. Combinations of tiles and wildlife offer a huge amount of repeatability in a pretty beautiful environment. This is one of the games that is easier to play, especially for the beginner version of the rules that simplify scoring. This makes it easier for everyone to jump into action.
- Embark on a journey to the Pacific Northwest as you compete to create ...
- 1-4 players
- 5-minute setup time
3. Sleep gods
Red Raven Games has released another wonderful box and artwork, but it is also one of the best games to be released in 2021. Red Raven is responsible for the wonderful Above and Below and have taken on the same style with Sleeping Gods.
They reinforced the elements of storytelling to create a beautiful experience where the actors embark on a voyage on the steamer Manticore.
- Explore a huge, open world in the game atlas of connecting maps ...
- The novel includes a long book of stories that you can read as you explore, fill ...
- Cooperative play allows players to easily jump in or out, ...
4. Ark Nova
Ark Nova gives players control over their own modern zoo. Players need to balance sponsors, conservation projects, staff, fences and all aspects of running a successful zoo.
Personally, I’m not a fan of zoos, but Ark Nova perfectly enlivens the theme. It’s not just about having animals, but managing all the responsibilities associated with it.
- BUILD YOUR ANIMAL TOP ON YOUR WAY - With the ultimate goal of ownership ...
- MORE THAN 250 UNIQUE CARDS - In the center of Ark Nova are cards ...
- HUNGRY AND FAST PLAYING - With 5 basic actions to choose from ...
5. Terraforming Mars: Elimination of Ares
Terraforming Mars is one of the best Sci-Fi board games out there and Ares Expedition takes it to a whole new level. Ares Expedition is a brand new standalone game added to the series.
Ares Expedition returns the mission to Mars, but this time it is present card form.

6. Ankh: The Gods of Egypt
Who doesn’t want to become a god? Ankh revives the ancient Egyptian gods in another spectacular production of CMON, known for its amazing miniature and value production.
In Ankh, players take on the role of Egyptian gods and must rule people, monsters and other deities. It’s beautifully made, but also one of the more fascinating games of 2021.
- BECOME AN EGYPTIAN GOD: Take on the role of the Egyptian god as ...
- STRATEGIC GAME: Fight for the worship of the people with ...
- UNIQUE ACTION MECHANIC: Players perform two actions per turn, ...
7. Fate
I was very excited about the Destines outcome. I’m a big fan of story-based games, and Destinies is pushing the boundaries.
Fate plays like a traditional pen and paper RPG but replaces Dungeon Master with an app . In Destinies, all the actors have their own goals and destinies and try to push the narrative to their advantage. It’s incredibly cool and perfect for those looking for more story-oriented gaming.
- Two ways to enjoy a solo game with open relaxed ...
- Destinies is for 1-3 players and has five unique scenarios
- Easy teaching in just minutes and 2-2.5 hours on the table ...
8. Oath: Chronicles of Empire and Exile
The oath is an interesting new approach to the game in the old style . Players have influenced the ancient land over the centuries. As players progress, history (previous games) will affect future play. This creates an impressive narrative and a completely unique world.
Interestingly, you can reset the game at any time and use it over and over again. There is no permanent mechanics that destroy the game, allowing for much more replay than a traditional abandoned game . It’s something completely unique that I’ve never seen before.
- In the oath, one to six players will lead the history of the ancient ...
- Start playing fast - If you don't like reading the rules in advance, our ...
- Extensive and impressive world - Oath has hundreds of maps ...
9. Meadow
Certainly one of the nicer games to come out in 2021 is Meadow a wonderful game to collect kits where players play the role of explorers as they travel to new lands.
The game itself is full of watercolor illustrations of wild animals. Players collect sets of different species of wildlife to earn the most points. It’s worth a look, especially if you appreciate good art in your games.

- CHALLENGING AND COMPETITIVE: Meadow is a drawing game where ...
- FUN FOR ALL AGES: The sleek Meadow design is easy to learn.
10. Cubitos
Judging by the box of Cubitos, I didn’t know what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. Cubitos is a weird-looking racing game in which players try to win the Cube Cup.
Each player has a racer on the board and a handful of dice as their support team. Players spin the dice and use the scores to get more dice, move up the board, or even use special abilities. It seems simple enough, but there is an element of blackjack where you can break down, which makes it fast, though not as simple as it seems.
