Something about the original Eldritch Horror
Eldritch Horror is the spiritual successor to Arkham Horror . I am a big fan of Arkham, but he was plagued by a number of shortcomings that I personally could overlook due to the remarkable experience he gave.
Eldritch Horror was built on a similar system, but with much clearer and more streamlined rules. The original board game created the same fear I enjoyed at Arkham, but he renamed it World Disaster instead of just a small town.
- SUSTAINABLE GAME OF TERROR AND ADVENTURE: Ancient evil upsets ...
- SCARY STRATEGY GAME: Defeat terrible monsters, travel to other worlds ...
- COOPERATIVE MYSTERY GAME: Brave investigators come together to ...
I’ll always love Arkham Horror, but Eldritch Horror is objectively a better game.
1. Eldritch Horror: Places in ruins
Cities in Ruin are coming up with four new investigators, including one of my favorites. Try to guess which one.
1 new ancient:
- Shudde M'ell
4 new investigators:
- Ashcan Pete
- Bob Jenkins
- Rita Young
- Roland Banks
In addition, players will also be able to stand up to the new antique, Shudde M’ell. A new encounter can be extremely brutal as the Ancients wake up and all the new characters have great abilities without being groundbreaking.
The Old One Shudde M’ell knows its presence in the face of disasters and calamities. Cities and Ruins is also not just a smart name for expansion. When Shudde M’ell wakes up, the world around him is devastated, which can literally destroy the spaces on the board. Meetings in devastated locations are much more difficult and if every space is devastated, investigators lose.
Places in ruins are, of course, equipped with all the usual extras, such as spells, weapons, and allies, but because of boss meetings and disasters, this one really shines. It is considered to be one of the more targeted extensions, but it also adds a lot of thematic elements to the mix.
2. Eldritch Horror: The Dreamlands
The Dreamlands is one of the later extensions of Eldritch Horror, but one of the best. It does not add anything new, but builds on some of the rules introduced in previous extensions.
2 new ancient:
- Altach_Nacha
- Hypnos
8 new investigators:
- Amanda Sharpe
- Carolyn Ferne
- Darrell Simmons
- Gloria Goldberg
- Kate Winthrop
- Luke Robinson
- Vincent Lee
- William Yorrick
Dreamlands includes 2 very themed ancient and 8 new investigators. It is one of the later extensions, which was accused of being more the same. This is not necessarily a bad thing. Additional investigators and the ancients add much more repeatability. If you’re a fan of the original game, adding the same game is a win for me.
3. Eldritch Horror: Under the Pyramids
Beneath the Pyramids is another extension for Eldritch Horror that comes from the depths with a ton of themed touches. As you can imagine from the title, we are heading to Egypt with a brand new board where you will be confronted with ancient horrors and of course iconic mummies.
2 new ancient:
- Abhoth
- Nephren-Ka
8 new investigators:
- Hank Samson
- Harvey Walters
- Joe Diamond
- Mandy Thompson
- Minh Thi Phan
- Monterey Jack
- Rex Murphy
- Sister Mary
To help you with your search , you will have access to 8 new investigators and a sarcophagus full of new and unique resources.
The new board only appears if you are using the new Ancient One, Nephron Ka, or adding Prelude under the Pyramids to the mix. It is a good addition and one of the better versions for large boxes.
4. Eldritch Horror: Signs of Carcos
The good old Dexter Drake wizard shows up here. He always reminds me of Dr. Orpheus of Venture Brothers ... but I resign.
The characters of Carcos is another card - just an extension that brings 4 new investigators and the great villain Hastur himself. The King in Yellow appears to be the only additional ancient and is a touch.
1 new ancient:
- Hastur
4 new investigators:
- Dexter Drake
- Jenny Barnes
- Michael Mc Glen
- Wendy Adams
To increase existential terror, we also get a bunch of new conditions and breakdowns that could be brutally curtailed unprepared.
5. Eldritch Horror: Strange Remnants
Unusual Remnants is another minor extension just for cards. It adds something more to everything, including a new kind of glamorous magic. There will be a lot of new maps you can visit, but what really shines this extension is Syzygy. It doesn’t have to be ancient, but rather an event.
1 new ancient (somehow):
- Syzgy
4 new investigators:
- Marie Lambeau
- Tony Morgan
- "Slip" O'Toole
- Zoey Samaras
Mythology from all parts of the world speaks of superstitions about Syzygy but don’t worry if you haven’t heard that term yet. This is an event where several celestial bodies line up, and this of course means disaster for our fearless investigators and the fate of the world.
Since a new meeting event is at odds with an ancient one, you will always have to face it. You can’t just stop the planets from aligning, right?
Strange Remnants includes a nice increase in cards for the base game, while maintaining some better rule changes (like focus) around and in the game.
6. Eldritch Horror: Abandoned Lore
At first glance, this extension looks a bit thin, but its benefits aren’t immediately apparent until you start diving into the field. If you love the vanilla version of Eldritch Horror and want to keep playing, this is probably a good choice. It only adds Yig as far as Ancient Ones is concerned, but it adds a ton of new Ancient Ones vanilla cards.
1 new ancient:
- Yig
There are also no new changes to the rules that can be learned, so it’s easiest to open and integrate your set of cores right from the start. The lack of new investigators is a bit gross - it would be nice to add some new faces - but it’s a nice little incentive for the core set.
7. Eldritch Horror: Up Madness
In the first expansion of a large box, the box becomes thick! Mountains of Madness adds a huge 7 new explorers, 2 new ancient ones, 3 new mechanics and an additional board for Antarctica.
2 new ancient:
- Older things
- Ithaqua
8 new investigators:
- Agnes Baker
- Daisy Walker
- Finn Edwards
- George Barnaby
- Patrice Hathaway
- Tommy Muldoon
- Ursula Downs
- Wilson Richards
The new mechanics are a nice addition that adds variety as opposed to unnecessary complexity. The sharpening ability allows players to gain a focal token through the action, which can, however, be used later for retesting later along the line.
Unique resources are added by special cards, which can only be obtained through special in-game promotions. You can’t just go to the store and buy them, so they’re much more powerful than a regular asset deck. Finally, the Preludes were first presented in The Mountains of Madness. They offer a new themed game change that really immerses you in the Eldritch Horror experience.
# 8. Eldritch Horror: Masks from Nyarlathotep
If the very thought of trying to pronounce “Nyarlathotep” fills you with existential horror, then you are probably in the right place.
You’ll notice that the Nyarlathotepa Masks are in a big box, but unlike many other extensions, you’ll also notice a marked lack of extra board. Hmm ...
2 new ancient:
- Predpotanij
- Nyarlathotep
7 new investigators:
- Agatha Crane
- Calvin Wright
- Carson Sinclair
- Daniela reyes
- Father Mateo
- Preston Fairmont
- Sefina Rousseau
He has a whole new way of playing, locked in his depths. Masks from Nyarlathotep bring a campaign-style game into your Eldritch Horror game. The entire campaign consists of 6 separate games in which players work together in multiple games to stop all 6 ancient ones. There are new maps and rules that support the new campaign game with Preludes and other fun themed pieces.
Oh, and by the way, if a character dies during a game, they devour him and release him until the end of the campaign: corpses, finished, coat. Best of luck.
