#1. Agricola (Revised Edition)

Agricola 3-Player Board Game

Players: 15
Playing Time: 30-150 minutes

In a land far, far away…

You and your spouse live alone and must turn your plot of land into a fruitful farm. You get two actions per turn, one for you and one for your spouse. The actions consist of any tasks you might find on a farm — collecting resources, building a fence, or even having children to lend an extra hand.

There are a few different variations on how to play Agricola. The basic game is played in 14 rounds with 6 harvest seasons.  In a harvest season, you must feed all your livestock as well as people, or risk losing points.  In each round, an action card is turned over. But don’t delay! Whoever chooses to accept the action first gets to complete it.

Points are awarded for anything that supports the farm’s development such as used fields, harvested crops, livestock collected, and family members. The player with the most points wins.

So make sure to have a har-vested interest in your land!

#3. Tzolk’in: The Mayan Calendar

Tzolk'in: The Mayan Calendar Board Game

Players: 24
Playing Time: 90 minutes

My oh, Mayans!

Gear up to compete as rival tribes in this Mayan civilization. Tzolk’in: The Mayan Calendar is a competitive game of strategy with a lot of moving parts. The board itself has rotating parts which can either work for or against you as it travels around.

The gameboard is set up with a central gear and smaller connected gears. The smaller gears can help you gather resources or build structures. The goal is to collect victory points by gathering resources and performing tasks to please the gods.

When it’s your turn, you have two choices; to place a worker or to remove a worker from a smaller gear. Corn is currency during these a-maize-ing times. Depending on where you chose to land or leave, it may cost you some! The central gear moves one notch after one round of turns, moving all the smaller gears along with it. So plan your workers accordingly.

The player with the most victory points after one full gear rotation wins. But if that’s not you… It’s not the end of the world!
