A brief overview of Salem in 1692

Salem 1692 is a social deduction card game designed for 4 -12 players, where accusations and mistrust in witch trials come right to your table! As you hold the game, you will notice that the box is in the shape of a book. Much like you would think a book of spells would look like - Salem was talking about witches after all.

In the game, you will be able to take on the role of 1 of the 12 possible characters who were actually real people who were present at the time - you can even read their biographies in the rules.

The game works by trying out (really old word for test) cards given to each person indicating whether you are a witch or not. The game then goes through as many rounds as needed, with stages where you need to figure out who you can trust while trying to keep your character alive!

How to play Salem 1692

Setup

Start by choosing a moderator from the group. The leader will have to decide whether to participate in the game or act as an external moderator - Salem 1692 allows both options. The leader is usually the most experienced person in the group.

If the moderator is going to play, they are known as a city crossover - they tell what happens in the night phases. Now, the amount of test cards handed out by each person depends only on the number of players. These test cards must be kept confidential.

The game starts with the dawn phase, there is only one dawn phase for each game. Here, the leader will instruct the witches to reveal themselves to each other while everyone’s eyes are closed. The witches will then place a harmful card (black cat - classic) on the deck of the chosen player. This card is then placed face up; its effects appear immediately.

The game then continues around the table in a clockwise direction. On the turn is a player who picks up 2 cards and plays at least one card. A person can play as many cards in one move as he likes. There are a total of 1 card category - green, blue and red. Each of these is pretty well explained in the rules, as it indicates on the card itself whether to play it right away or keep it indefinitely.

The overall goal of the game is to kill all the witches or expose all the witches in Salem, depending on your role. The game continues until one of these goals is achieved. The player dies when one of the test cards reveals the witch to him, all the test cards are revealed, or when the witch kills them in the night phase.

Once a witch, always a witch

In the game you will notice that there are special black cards. These are called conspiracy cards. Once drawn, they must be played immediately. When playing, each person will take a face-down test card from the person on the left. This card is then carefully reviewed and added to the player's board face down.

If the card indicates anything about the witch, you have now joined the witch ranks! Even if they take the card again later, you are still a witch. And when the night phase card is played, then you work together with others in the role of a witch.

These are the basic rules of the game. Some difficult situations are explained in the policy if you ever find yourself in one of them.

Advantages disadvantages

Advantages:

  • Great game for Parties and mixed social groups
  • Up to 12 players can join
  • A book-shaped box sets the mood before the game even starts

If you have a social group of people, this is a great game! This game will bring together hard game fans and board players in a way that only a few games can handle.

The shape of the box is a really nice touch to the theme of the game. Surely this will be a conversational point when others see it!

Weaknesses:

  • The rules are not always clear beginners
  • The mechanics of the games may not be to the liking of hardcore gamers

If no one in the group has played the game yet, understanding the rules may be a bit challenging. So the first or two games might not be as much fun as we expected. The rules explain some of the difficult situations that can sometimes happen; but if you’re new to the game, it can be huge.

If you are a person who regularly plays challenging board games, you may notice some game mechanics that are not very smooth, especially in terms of how they allow the game to run as you progress.

Conclusion: verdict - last move

Salem 1692 is a bluffing, hidden, treacherous board game designed to excite people during a party. And he does it very well. This is a game that will connect any group of people in an instant. What attracts the game is the large number of people who can play at the same time. The artwork of the cards is also top notch.

It’s the kind of game that won’t go out of fashion and is perfect for any occasion. Salem 1692 can help break the ice and would definitely get rid of all the unpleasant silences!

The last thing to consider when buying a game is that it would not be the best game too often. If played too often, the fun and spontaneous aspect can be spoiled. However, you could definitely consider this a new classic in any collection - whether you are a serious actor or just someone looking for fun.
