The best dice board games

Cubes have been around for centuries. They were the first means of social conversion, gambling, and divination. Cubes could be easily formed from stone, clay, wood or bone and provide hours of entertainment for ancient peoples.

... And dice games are still nearby. Their popularity has never diminished over the years and the variety of dice games has only expanded. Our shelves are full of dice games that always get time on the table.

Sagrada is a wonderful and unique game in which players with colorful cubes create patterns on stained glass. It’s challenging, easy to learn, absolutely stunning on the table, and most of all, fun.

A brief history of dice

The cubes have been used before written history, although it is not certain where they came from. The oldest known dice were excavated as part of a backgammon-like game set up in Burnt City, an archeological site in southeastern Iran, estimated between 2800 and 2500 BC. Other excavations from ancient tombs in the Indus Valley Civilization point to South Asian origins (present-day India). The Egyptian game Senet (link) was played with dice until 3000 BC.

Mythological stories about dice

One of the oldest mythological tales tells of the Roman god Mercury, who gambled with Selena and won five days of epact from her (thus adding up 365 days a year and reconciling the lunar and solar calendars).

The ancient Greek philosopher Plato attributes the invention of dice to the Egyptian god, saying, “In the Egyptian city of Naucratis there was a famous ancient god named Theuth; a bird called the Ibis was sacred to him and was the inventor of many skills such as arithmetic and calculation, geometry and astronomy, drafts and cubes, but his great discovery was the use of letters. "

Many dice faces

While they may be the ones that first come to mind when you think of dice, six-sided dice aren’t the only game in town (designed for word play). If you’ve ever played Dungeons & Dragons, you’ll know 4-sided, 8-sided, 10-sided, 12-sided and even 20-sided dice. Hexagonal cubes are perhaps the most common, but probably developed from “slightly less square cubes”. In his Encyclopedia of Games in Today’s Society , Jay Laird theorized that dice evolved from the practice of divination with the talus of ungulates, colloquially known as “bone bones,” one of the oldest divination techniques involving chance.

If you’re a nerd like me, check out our article on board game history to get the full story.

Okay, now that we have an idea of where dice games come from, let’s go rollerblading (meant for word play).

RETURNED GLASS WINDOWS ... WOOHOO!

Well, it’s hard to be very upset about stained glass, but it’s easy to get attracted to Sagrada’s game. It’s probably one of the nicest dice games I’ve ever seen. And it's fun.

Sagrada is a dice game in which players draw dice from a bag to complement a stained glass pattern on their board. You will be able to choose from many options, as Sagrada has 90 multi-colored cubes available to suit your artistic expression.

  • BEAUTIFUL AND FUN - Sagrada invites you to think, wonderful ...

However, a finely tuned artistic style is not as easy as throwing dice. Each stained glass pattern has a specific pattern, and some dice can only be played in certain places on the board according to color or number of dots. If the dice do not work together, there are several special abilities you can use to change the dice.

# 2. Older sign

Board game of older characters

If you have problems with the gods of dice, maybe it's time to find a new god… Eldritch maybe one?

Elder Sign is based on dice, Lovecraft - an inspired board game from Fantasy Flight Games. If this sounds familiar, it’s because Arkham is a horror from the same designer and has a lot of the same themes and some mechanics. It is basically a limited version of Arkham Horror with dice. If you’ve ever played Arkham, you’ll know that the limited version of Arkham is still a great game.

Elder Sign is almost like a distorted version of Yahtzee . Investigators must make efforts to prevent the awakening of the older gods. To complete the tasks, investigators throw a handful of custom cubes and try to match the symbols on the task card. Players will take all the dice that match the task and return if there is any left. Tasks are getting harder as each retreat removes the cube from the cube pool. Eventually, they will complete the task and earn a reward, or they will fail and receive punishment (usually loss of health or sanity).

# 3. Roll for Galaxy

Roll for the Galaxy board game

"Cursed be the poor man who enslaves such a grip,
Whoever puts his life and soul at stake. "
OraHorace (Roman scholar), 1st century BC

Have you ever heard of the theory that the whole universe could be inside a single atom?
Whether or not it can really contain the entire galaxy in the form of a few maps and a handful of cubes.

Roll for Galaxy is very complicated for such a compact dice game. In it, players use a variety of custom cubes to explore, colonize, and explore technologies for their own space civilization. Each side of the dice corresponds to a specific action that the player can perform, and any additional planet or technology acquired during the game will give bonus dice or special abilities to increase or change the results of the dice.

Roll for the Galaxy is a beginner-friendly version of Race for the Galaxy and I personally like it more because of the simplified gameplay.

Roll for Galaxy
Roll for Galaxy
  • 2-5 players
  • 45 minutes playing time
  • Great strategy game

The only weakness I can remember is related to human nature. Players roll the dice behind the screen and place them on their action board. If you don’t trust your teammates not to change their genres, you may want to consider who you’re playing with.

# 4. Marvel Dice Masters: Avengers Vs. X-Men

Marvel Dice Masters: Avengers vs X-Men

Collective Cubes !? Who thinks of that ...? and why can't I stop rolling?

Marvel Dice Masters is one of the craziest mixes of genres and mechanics I can remember. It mixes building decks (building dice?), Collecting card games and mechanics from Magic: The Gathering to create a truly unique experience.

Instead of building decks, dice masters replace cards with dice. Players select 8 different hero cards (or villains) and add them to stock. Each card has a specific set of dice that matches each card, and players will put together a stock of 20 dice that will be split between 8 cards.

Throughout the game, players will buy these dice to add to their dice. On each move, players discard a handful of random dice from their set of dice, which will determine which actions and attacks they can perform in each turn.

The game is actually played as Magic: The Gathering-style duel, in which players will fight Marvel heroes and villains and attack the opponent's life points.

There are many strategies and synergies that can be combined and matched, depending on which cards and dice are selected at the beginning of the game and which dice are purchased throughout the game.

Marvel Dice Masters: Avengers vs X-Men

  • The two-player starter kit includes 2 custom dice and 44 cards
  • Featuring Marvel Superheroes Officially licensed

Each cube is completely different and super fun. Each hero and villain has his own colored cubes with a customized symbol that makes it easy to identify. The game itself is actually very cheap, and the extra packages are only a dollar, so it’s one of the few collector’s games that won’t break the burden.

# 5. Machi Koro

Machi Koro board game

"Then who can trust the dice in the throw of fortune?" EoGeoffrey Chaucer, known as the father of English Literature , 14th century

Machi Koro is a simplified design and easy to learn and play.

Step 1: Build things
Step 2: Fold the dice
Step 3: Make a profit

As if Sim City and Catan Island had love.

In Machi Koro, you become the mayor of your city. You decide for yourself which buildings will go to the city, and the cubes decide which resources you will get at each step.

Everything in the game is simple, and everything also has a charming aesthetic that matches that simplicity. The artwork, for example, won’t be hanging in the Louvre anytime soon, but I honestly wouldn’t mind hanging it on my wall. The rules are adopted very quickly, but it’s a lot of fun to have so few mechanics.

# 6. Pandemic: medicine

Pandemic: Board Game Girls

Pandemic is one of my favorite cooperative games of all time. It’s challenging, strategic, cooperative, and so damn useful when you win. The drug is one of many versions of the pandemic that have come out in the last 10+ years.

Pandemic: The Cure takes everything I like about Pandemic and distills it into a simplified dice experience.

Players familiar with the Pandemic will be at home with a tense game and watching all of their well-planned work revolve around them as diseases break out and spread.

Cure is a bit more random than a normal pandemic, but it’s much faster, so it’s perfect for playing when you’re in a slightly bigger time crunch. Due to the mechanics of the dice, The Cure also suffers much less from Alpha Gamer Syndrome . Players will still be talking and trying to strategize moves, but because of the dice, you simply don’t have another player to iron out the game.

# 7. King of Tokyo

King Tokyo's board game

"It's lost with the dice, what an ancient honor it has won." LiamWilliam Shakespeare, English playwright, 16th century

Who doesn’t love the giant monsters invading Tokyo? Maybe Tokyo citizens, but that’s not the point.

The point is all in the dice and the King of Tokyo has them in the ratings. It is a Kaiju-based dice game in which players will compete to take control of Tokyo. When one giant monster takes control of Tokyo, they will gain winning points at every turn, and every attack will hit every other player in the game. Being a king is always the downside. Each player will constantly try to attack the king until he is forced to flee ... or die.

Each turn players roll dice in Yahtzee style. They will be able to choose which dice they want to keep and turn others over. This happens twice. You can get a number (1,2,3) to score points, fists to hit other monsters or energy screws to buy superpowers.

The King of Tokyo looks so goofy and it reminds me of watching the miserable Godzilla and King Kong movies. For those of you who don’t know what the Kaiju genre is, it’s a science fiction genre that originated in Japan, where giant monsters in rubber suits fight with soft surfaces. They’re camping, not taking themselves too seriously, and having fun, which is all King Tokyo is ... in a box.

# 8. Throne of the Cubes: Season 1

Throne of the Cubes: Season 1 Board Game

Let's get ready for slugfest!

Dice Throne has players fighting for the last player or team in a fight.

Each character gets a unique hero that they can use during the game, and each has a set of dice included. I really like dice in this game. Each player's dice are not only tailored to what is on the face of the dice, but are also beautifully designed to match the aesthetics of the character.

During the attack, players will roll their custom dice that match the abilities printed on the player's board, and the defender will do the same, but will only be able to use his defensive skills on his board.

To add a little more flavor to the game, players can draw cards and use battle points tossed from the dice to use special abilities that can upgrade heroes or change dice to their advantage.

Dice Throne is an exciting game. The dice fly fast and you will fight to the knees before you even realize it. Each of the characters plays and feels different, so it’s not outdated and the choice of characters affects the game a bit more than just the choice of color.

# 9. Star Wars: Fate

Star Wars: A board game

"Thousand Fate Who Throws the Dice,
And When He Runs
From Kings Makes Farmers,
And Farmers Kings."
John Dryden, English poet, 17th century

In a not-so-distant galaxy, not so long ago, a battle raged between the two factions. The weapon chosen was not a lightsaber or an explosion. The fate of the galaxy was decided by ... DICE.

Star Wars: Fate is a bit more collectible than some of the other dice games on this list. Starter packs have 2 heroes or 2 villains who will make up the team. Each hero will have custom dice when the character is activated, and his corresponding card contains all the references for his abilities and actions.

The games are very easy to learn and the instructions are just a two-page leaflet. When building a deck that will go along with the heroes, you will need to match the colors of the heroes or villains you choose. If you have a yellow and a blue hero, you can add blue, yellow and gray (neutral) cards to your deck.

Some cards will also have custom dice that will go with them or add special abilities to the heroes. For example, you can give a classic Lei a big old blaster to replace its generic one, or equip a storm with a Tie Fighter.

The game ends when a player runs out of cards or when the heroes or villains of one team are killed.

For a touch of Star Wars and some big dice, Star Wars: Destiny offers a fun themed experience in the galaxy that is surprisingly close.

# 11. Quarriors!

Quarriors! Board game

"The commitment of the greatest is to face risks and dangers and play dice for death." RiedFriedrich Nietzsche, German philosopher, 19th century

REVIEWERS! COME TO PLAY !!

This game will look very similar to the dice master. This is because the Dice Masters system is based on QUARRIORS!

In Quarriors, players will draw and roll dice much like a fantasy umbrella builder , Q filled theme. Each card will have the corresponding dice and all the reference information so that players will know exactly what each symbol on the custom dice means. Players compete for points of fame. So the first player to score a certain number of points wins. The total number of points varies according to the number of players.

Quarriors is probably the first dice game ever made. Being the first has some advantages and disadvantages. It was the first game to mix all these elements together, so it has a bit of a nostalgic effect that makes it special. She suffers from a few minor issues with the rules that were leveled and perfected in the Dice Masters series that succeeded her.

Does that mean the Quarriors are no longer good? Not the devil. Quarriors is still fast and full of stupid word players who will make you laugh all the time.

# 12. Panamax

Panamax board game

"Capitalism knows only one color: that color is green." HomThomas Sewell, American economist and social theorist

Panamax puts players in the shoes of various shipping companies trying to push cargo and make the most money.

Each player will control one company and ultimately control its fate. During the game, you will also have the opportunity to invest in shares of other companies that will fluctuate throughout the game, depending on how well you are doing.

In Panamax, the player with the most money will win. Notice, I didn’t say anything about the most successful shipping company. In case art imitates life, you don’t have to have the most successful company to win. In fact, in some cases, it might be better to recharge your business and let it break down. If your opponents have invested heavily in your business, it pays to let go of the tank.

Where are the dice?

The dice in the game represent the load. Players will have to load cargo onto ships to earn it. When they actually deliver it, they will gain special abilities or bonuses. Ships otherwise require weight and the cubes need to be managed as efficiently as possible, otherwise all this sweet cargo will sit in storage and not bring you money.

Panamax
Panamax
  • Original game mechanics: ships with a chain reaction ("pushing"), ...
  • Great interaction of players with ships and economy
  • The unique theme of the game, timed with the release for the 100th anniversary ...

Panamax has a lot of moving parts, but it’s partly so fascinating. The fight for cargo delivery and the stock system in companies adds depth to the game, which will take you to many sessions at your desk.

# 13. Plans

Board game plans

How do you make a building? With dice, of course!

Plans is a great (and compact) game in which players make buildings out of cubes according to the secret plan they got at the beginning of the game.

Each plan contains an image of a three-dimensional stack of cubes that make up the building, and each different color of the cubes represents a different building material. When the players take turns, they will draw dice from a group of dice and then place the dice on their hidden player boards to match the plan.

Players get a bonus for completing the plan correctly, but they also get extra points, depending on what building material they used (colored cubes) and where they are located in the building. Once players get to a certain point, it may be worth completely ignoring the plan and just building everything that works.

Frankenstein’s buildings and angry performers aside, Blueprints has a lot more strategy than it seems at first glance. First, the cube pool always offers the option for another player to pull out exactly the matrix you need. Why this death? Well, in order for a matrix to fold and make a taller building, the value of the matrix must be equal to or higher than the one on which it sits, which gradually makes it more difficult to build taller buildings. If that’s not enough, different materials usually work best in certain situations, and the wrong draft of cubes can ruin your well-crafted plans.

Plans

I really enjoy drawing. It’s a deceptively complex but incredibly fun game that is still easy to learn and is a hit among the uninitiated in the social gaming community, making it the perfect transition game for newer players.

Dice Forge Board Game

"I loved wine very much, I gambled a lot." LiamWilliam Shakespeare, English playwright, 16th century

Dice Forge is one of the few games where you can completely customize your dice in the game. No, that doesn’t mean you have to build a pool with cubes. I think you have to literally rip the bruise off your face and replace it with another; forging a completely new matrix.

Dice Forge has one of the most beautiful components I’ve ever seen, which makes it even more amazing that it’s mostly a dice game.

Players gamble dice at every turn and gain resources depending on the roll. Players can receive colored gems, gold, or winning points, depending on their role, and can use them to purchase cards that upgrade dice or give other bonuses.

Upgrading dice can be as simple as upgrading a page that gives 1 gold to 2 gold, or it becomes a little nutty. There are sites that give an x3 multiplier, resource selection, and bonus points depending on the other game. Each player's dice will be completely different by the end of the game.

Holding all of these components together would be a nightmare, but the production value you put in the box is amazing. The sides of the cubes have a very organized tray that is easy to set up and arrange everything. The cards and board have a wonderful layout, and all the cards have nice slots that perfectly fit everything you need, and each player will have a board to accompany all the resources.

# 15. Place of the dice

Dice City Board Game Review

We all welcome the kingdom of Rolldovia!

The place of the cubes is a cute little builder. Players must upgrade opponents as they try to build a new capital of the kingdom. Only the most fashionable city built with cubes will be worth the appointment for the capital of Rolldovia.

Seriously, the name of the kingdom is Rolldovia. If that doesn’t mean to you how serious this dice game is, then nothing will. In each move, players will roll a handful of dice that you can spend on a number of campaigns, depending on the layout of your site.

It’s light and great for a younger crowd that drips wonderfully with weirdness and heartiness.

# 16. Zombie Dice

Board game Zombie Dice

Zombies are in everything today; completely relentless and unstoppable. They even come in cubes. Zombie Cubes author Steve Jackson is an extremely simple waster of time for good luck.

I pull this out when I have 15-20 minutes before I go out or whenever I’m waiting for something. Pull 3 cubes out of the jar and roll. In Zombie Dice, the players are zombies and boy, do you like brains.

To play, grab 3 dice and fold. Every brain is a point, fingerprints mean your victims have escaped (for now ...), and an explosion means you fired a rifle. Three shots and it’s your turn to end and you lose the brains you may have wrapped up.

After each roll, you can pull another cube out of the cup and escape all the escaped victims. The brains and rifles stay where they are, and you can give up at any time before you are shot three times to score points.

Custom cubes are available in 3 colors; green, yellow and red. The colors indicate the relationship between the brain and the rifles. Green = more options for the brain and red = more options for a shot in the face.

# 17. Cubes Stars

Dice Stars board game

"Whose game was the empire and whose roles were the thrones, whose table earth, whose dice were human bones." Lord Byron, 18th century

Roll some dice. Push your happiness.

Dice Stars is a very simple game similar to Yahtzee. Players gamble dice and score sums on the list. Dice Stars is a bit more complicated when it comes to scoring. Players take a certain number of dice out of the bag and spin them. Instead of the usual dice numbers, players can also achieve the colors and values of the stars. Dice Stars is equipped with a custom table to help keep track of all this, making it much easier to see and do than to explain.

Players will complete a list of points at specific locations, depending on whether the player opts for numbers, colors, or stars. The stars have their special points. There will be a number of stars for each section. If a player opts for a star, he can fill the same number of stars. At the end of the game, if the star line is completely filled, that line is worth DOUBLE points. If it is only partially filled with stars, the whole line is worth a lot of fat. If there are no stars at all, it’s only worth the regular points.

Cubes Stars

Dice Stars is a very simple concept and owes a lot of its roots to Yahtzee, but overall it’s just a more fun game (and I like Yahtzee). I used to play it for hours in the garage with my friends and there were a lot of fond memories associated with it, but Dice Stars completely replaced it for me. It’s more interesting, more fun, and much nicer.

# 18. POK! Dice game

POK! A game of dice

Pok! Pok! If you don’t pull out your finger guns while playing Bang! you are doing wrong.

Mandatory gun aside, Bang! is a version of the dice game of the same name. The rules are a bit simpler and streamlined, and the whole game can be played in about 15 minutes.

It is a mixture of dice and the hidden mechanics of traitors with three factions; law (sheriff and deputies), fugitives and apostates. The law wins if the sheriff survives and removes all fugitives and apostates. Fugitives win if they manage to survive and remove the sheriff, and Renegadists win if all the refugees are dead and the sheriff is killed.

The game uses special dice that are rolled around Yahtzee. Players will have one initial roll and two reps while storing items they want to keep.

Players can submit:

  • Dynamite: It can’t be moved and if you get three BOOMs, they turn.
  • 1 and 2: Players can shoot at a player who is 1 or 2 places away from the table.
  • Gatling Gun (3 shooting ratings): If you manage to spin 3 of these, ALL of them hit.
  • Arrow: Hit the arrow and take the arrow. When you take the last arrow marker, everyone lists the arrows they have and they do so much damage (it can be pretty brutal).

Bang! it’s such an interesting mix of hidden elements and gambling that it’s hard not to like it. In addition to hidden roles, each player will receive a historically inaccurate alter-ego (Willy the Kid?) With special powers.

# 19. Liar's Dice

Board game Liars Dice

"Death and dice make up for all the differences." AmSamuel Foote, “The Minor,” Act 1

Liar's Dice is a simple yet classic game.

All you need is a handful of dice and maybe a cup to roll them into.

Each player gets 5 dice to secretly spin and look at the dice (the cup would be handy here). Players then take turns betting on the results of one digit of all the dice on the table, not just the ones they see.

I put two 4s.

The next player then raises the bet by betting on either a higher value of the same number of dice (two 5s or two 6s) or more dice (three 1s, seven 4s, etc.).

The bets are gradually increased until someone is called a liar.

He can play any number of players at the same time, but he only works best with a handful. I used to play this game in the Navy, but sometimes we turned it into a drink (I suggest rum).

# 20. DiceBot Megafun

Dicebot Megafun board game

MEGAFUN !!! Seriously, what a funny name. What is DiceBot anyway? But it sounds mega fun.

In DBMF (I really enjoy a good acronym) players will roll dice to install modules in DiceBots.

What do DiceBots do? Of course, destroy the other cubes as well.

Players rank a handful of custom dice that suit different types of skills, and a handful of cards full of abilities and weapons to destroy their enemies. Players take their dice and place them on a board representing different parts of the DiceBot (head, arms, legs, body). The dice you insert into the DiceBot determine which weapons and abilities you can use.

But beware if dice gods like Wil Wheaton curse you. DiceBots Megafun relies heavily on dice when running campaigns, and if you haven’t calmed the RNG gods, a world of injuries awaits you.

Wrap-Up

Despite so much new technology, increasingly sophisticated mechanics, and themed intensities in the field of board games, new games are still coming in every year that rely solely on dice. They’ve certainly become more complex since their ancestor ancestors first appeared on the scene, but they still have the simplicity of some of the earliest games. Tell me I'm old-fashioned, but sometimes a simple dice game can be nothing the Doctor ordered.

We hope you enjoyed our selections for the best dice board games. Have you played any of these dice games? Let us know in the comments. We would love to hear from you.
