Review of Yahtzee
There are some old classic games and Yahtzee is definitely no exception! It was originally released in its current form in 1956 - quite some time ago! However, since he is still present, he needs to have something for it. Read our full review of Yahtzee and you will soon understand why.
A brief overview of Yahtzee
Yahtzee is considered a classic dice game. This is a game for 2 -10 players - the number of players varies in certain gaming communities, but this is not a serious issue. The game consists of each player rolling 5 dice (up to 3 times) to get a certain combination of dice.
There are only 13 turns per player in the game, and the player will have to decide what combination to put in his scorecard. Once a special combination is selected, they can no longer use it in the game. The person with the highest amount wins in the end!
There are a huge variety of game versions, from Star Wars to The Hobbit. There will certainly be a topic that would interest all possible fandoms.
Unpacking Yahtzee
Since there are so many versions, we will only talk about unpacking the classic version of Hasbro. There’s another classic version that seems to come from the 1950s that we won’t discuss in detail - trust me, you’ll know that when you see it.
The box has a standard and classic look. The box is quite large for a game that only has dice. This version also has a small travel box inside - which is unusual, but still doesn’t explain the large size of the box.
In the box you will find:
- 5 cubes
- Notebook
- Rules
- A small travel box
How to play Yahtzee
Classic Yahtzee gameplay
Yahtzee is a very simple game to learn to play. Maybe that’s why it’s been so long and so many different versions have emerged. There is literally no setting except to take the dice out of the container and get a pen to record the results on the attached sheets.
There will be a total of 13 turns. Each player will roll 5 dice to see what combination he can get. There are 13 different types of combinations that count as points - the better the combination, the more points are scored in this category.
Players will decide which combination they want their dice to fall into. Once this combination is selected, it can no longer be used or changed, even if a better shift occurs later.
If the player is not satisfied with the results of the dice they have just thrown, he has the option to roll any number of dice a maximum of 3 more times. This is especially useful in the last part of the game!
Advantages disadvantages
Advantages:
- It’s a classic for a reason - a lot of fun
- Lots of different versions
- Portable
- Easy to learn
Yahtzee has been around for a long time for a good reason, people love to play it. The reason for this is because he was so flexible that he included a wide variety of interests. The basic idea on which the whole game is based allows the use of different themes. Surprisingly, the most popular version is the classic. 50 million copies can’t go wrong - right?
Another great feature is that it is portable in itself . There is no reduced version, it is already thin. And that was fully exploited - which is great.
Weaknesses:
- This is based on coincidence
- Not for everyone
- Box, packaging
As a game of dice, there is always a factor of chance. Depending on how lucky you are or how you feel, the game might not be so much fun for everyone. We all know that there is one person who has angered the gods of dice, they know that - this game may not be so pleasant for them.
Even with all the different topics, not everyone will like it. And that's fine. Not everyone will like every match.
I have to admit one thing, it’s a little annoying when board games are equipped with a big box and then they have most of the space in them like empty air. It’s kind of like having a big packet of chips and then finding out it’s mostly flavored air (you know what I mean). I think we could pack the game into a better box that would make better use of the space. This makes the game look much bigger than it really is, and gives a false impression.
Other versions of Yahtzee
The classic game is the basis for all the other versions available. The difference is that a new theme was added and sometimes the sides of the cubes were changed. Instead of classic cubes, thematic symbols were placed on 6 pages.
There is also a Junior version that is supposed to include young children. However, there is actually no age limit for the game - as long as the player can understand what is going on.
Conclusion: a verdict?
Yahtzee is quite old and not the most innovative game, let’s not deny it. Still, it's great. Playing is just fun. Whether you are young or old, you will enjoy it very much.
It has a very slight nostalgic feel like Rummikub and other old holiday games . But that should not deter anyone from doing so.
Definitely not for fans of hardcore board games, which makes sense as it wouldn’t appeal to them. However, casual gaming is in one of its most original forms to suit almost everyone. Definitely a game to consider.
